The village
Puy Saint Martin has at the present time a population of more than 900
inhabitants. The land in the commune is shared between agriculture (650
hectares) and forest (400 hectares). The fields on the plain are used
partly for the production of seeds: alfalfa seeds, cereals, and also flowers,
in particular sweet peas. Parsley, sage, lemon balm and celery are also
grown, to be marketed in plant form. The fruit trees of former times have
been replaced by tomatoes, sunflowers or sorghum.
The hills on the horizon towards the north and the east now bear only
a few isolated plots of grassland or cultivation. If you walk towards
the Chevriere quarter, you can still see the low walls of the former terraces.
But all this part of the commune has become forestland during the past
few decades: oaks stand next to Austrian pines, introduced a century ago,
and especially the Aleppo pine, which populates the remarkable Pigne forest.
The inhabitants of Puy saint Martin are proud of their heritage. On
the hill there is a great activity with the dim of bringing the old village
back to life: clearing away the undergrowth on the plots of land, reopening
the streets and the lanes in the Châstelas, creating an aromatic garden
on the summit, not to mention a project for an arboretum on the north-facing
slope, restoration of the wash-houses and fountains ...
Along the road which goes straight across the plain, without the slightest
bend, to the next village, Cléon d'Andran, the business area is to be
found. It is in this easily accessible quarter that, little by little,
the new village facilities have been set up: shops, center for extra-curricular
activities...
